About Us

Northside Speech Solutions P.C. has been providing Speech-Language and Feeding therapy in the home since 2010!  We treat speech, language, and feeding disorders in individuals of different ages, from infants (Early Intervention) to school age children.  We also specialize in accent reduction for adults.

What is Speech?  What is Language? What is Feeding?

Speech is the verbal means of communicating. Speech consists of the following:

Articulation
How speech sounds are made (e.g., children must learn how to produce the "r" sound in order to say "rabbit" instead of "wabbit").

Voice
Use of the vocal folds and breathing to produce sound (e.g., the voice can be abused from overuse or misuse and can lead to hoarseness or loss of voice).

Fluency
The rhythm of speech (e.g., hesitations or stuttering can affect fluency).


Language is made up of socially shared rules that include the following:

  • What words mean (e.g., "star" can refer to a bright object in the night sky or a celebrity)
  • How to make new words (e.g., friend, friendly, unfriendly)
  • How to put words together (e.g., "Peg walked to the new store" rather than "Peg walk store new")
  • What word combinations are best in what situations ("Would you mind moving your foot?" could quickly change to "Get off my foot, please!" if the first request did not produce results)


Feeding disorders include problems gathering food and getting ready to suck, chew, or swallow it.

The following are some signs and symptoms of feeding and swallowing problems in very young children:

  • refusing food or liquid 
  • failure to accept different textures of food (e.g., only pureed foods or crunchy cereals) 
  • long feeding times (e.g., more than 30 minutes) 
  • difficulty chewing  
  • coughing or gagging during meals 
  • excessive drooling or food/liquid coming out of the mouth or nose 
  • difficulty coordinating breathing with eating and drinking 
  • less than normal weight gain or growth 

As a result, children may be at risk for dehydration or poor nutrition, aspiration (food or liquid entering the airway) or penetration, pneumonia or repeated upper respiratory infections that can lead to chronic lung disease, and/or embarrassment or isolation in social situations involving eating.
